Our mare is showing signs of first stage labour, on and off. Moody, looking, biting, kicking, and nickering at her sides. And a few more signs. I don't quite know what her definite signs of labour are and whether or not she will bag up/wax. She has not bagged up yet, unfortunately. I am hoping for that to happen sooner or later, but before she foals!
She's a maiden mare, we are maiden breeders. I'm just looking for some reassurance and tips on foaling, breeding, and raising foals and horses.
Thanks plenty!

Maiden Mares can be a challenge since they have no idea about this foaling process. (most have not read the book on foaling.) Hah.

But it is not uncommon for maiden mares to foal without an udder. If your mare is uncomfortable and acting colicky, it could be the foal positioning itself into the birthing position about 3 -4 days before foaling. Some mares are drama queens and can put on quite a performance, and other mares will just ignore the process. The mare's belly will look considerably smaller once the foal has flipped into position. But I highly recommend if the mare continues to be uncomfortable, to call your vet in case there is a problem. And if your mare foals without milk, (the foal needs that colostrum within 2 hours), your vet can inject the mare with a shot to bring on her milk, and you can also stimulate the mare by hand milking her and feeding the foal with a bottle. I have done this, but all ended well.

Good Luck and let us know about your new baby.
