Many owners have inquired about feeding Pure alfalfa hay to their miniature horses. Careful feed management is required here. A mixed hay of 40% (or less) Alfalfa and 60% Timothy or grass hay is a better choice.
Alfalfa is very high in calcium and it is known that a long term diet of Pure Alfalfa hay may produce the miniature (as well as full size horses) to develop kidney stones which can become lodged in the urethra, causing severe colic. The famous imported Chianti died from colic complications caused from a rich diet of Pure Alfalfa hay.
I recently took my 4-H Club to visit the University of Guelph Large Animal Clinic (the largest teaching veterinary hospital in Canada). The tour guide passed around a large round rock like object and we were asked to guess "what is this". It was a stone surgically removed from a full size horse.
